Your body predetermines which fat stores it will use. For example, doing sit-ups will strengthen your abs but will not take the fat off of your stomach. An activity like running burns fat all over your body, not just your legs. A balanced exercise program should include cardio and selection of weight training exercises to gradually lose weight and tone the body.
Overall body fat must be reduced to lose fat in any particular area. Although fat is lost or gained throughout the body it seems the first area to get fat, or the last area to become lean, is the midsection (in men and some women, especially after menopause) and hips and thighs (in women and few men). While exercising the muscle may increase endurance or strength, it won't burn off the fat in that area.
So, rather than getting on the floor at night to do sit-ups and push-ups, go for a brisk 30 minute walk (that would be faster than cruising the mall), if you are just starting out, or a 30 minute jog/run…then do sit-ups and push-ups
